Keeping in shape these days involves more than just lifting weights. Besides keeping our bodies healthy, it seems that we need to remember to exercise our brains, especially as we age. The old adage of “use it or lose it” applies in so many areas, and especially regarding the health of our brains.
We’re seeing lots more articles these days on ways to keep ourselves as mentally fit as possible. Our local paper, the Ventura County Star, recently ran an article about two local physicians who work with patients to increase brain health.
Dr. Lorne Label runs the Brain Longevity Center in Thousand Oaks. After evaluating patients, he makes recommendations regarding diet, exercise, and other factors, including the use of a specialized computer program designed to “work out the brain”. Dr. Arnold Bresky, of the Camarillo Springs Holistic Medical Center, uses music and drawing, as well as focusing on physical, social, and mental fitness in his “Brain Tune-Up” program. Both of their websites are loaded with great information and ideas for keeping ourselves as sharp as possible.
