This is a hard time to be looking for a job, especially for young people and for people who need to make a career change. Over the years, I’ve found a couple of useful tools that I’d like to recommend. Many people don’t know what types of careers may suit them best. There is a very thorough, professional and inexpensive test available online for only $4.95 . It takes about 30 minutes to complete, and provides a very thorough, easy to read report that will help you identify your “vocational personality” types and give you specific career ideas.
You can find it at www.self-directed-search.com . It was developed by a leader in the field of vocational testing, John Holland. Try it for yourself! I did, and I also had my younger son take it during high school. It gave us a lot of insight, and really validated his sense of what he might want to do with his life.
That’s a great segue into recommending the book, The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People, by Carol Eikleberry, PhD. Her book is actually how I heard about John Holland’s vocational model. I was the mother of a teenage “rock star” who was very popular locally with his band, but who was trying to figure out what else to do with his life.
As a person who is very conventional and routine-oriented, I learned a lot about my own son’s creative and artistic personality by reading this book. I recommend it highly, not only for parents, but especially for people who feel that they “don’t fit” into what our society values so highly — task-oriented, money-first professions. Take a look and see what you think.
