So long, 2009!

Hello 2010!Are you ready to say good-bye to 2009?  It seems like it’s been a tough year.  In all my years of practice as a therapist, I have never seen so many clients hit hard by financial problems as in this year.  It seemed to come from all sides.  Many lost jobs, others found their businesses at risk, everyone lost money in the stock market, some lost their homes.

And yet through it all, people seemed to retain a sense of what is truly important.  They were grateful for their families, their loved ones, their friends.  They were grateful for having a roof over their heads, food on the table, and for health.

I think this year has taught all of us a lot.  This was the year to stop mindless buying, and to try to save for a rainy day — while the sky was falling! pardon the (mixed metaphors).  This was the year to focus less on work, and more on people, because work, after all, isn’t why we do what we do.  We do it for the people in our lives.

Hopefully we will carry those lessons into the New Year.  Here’s the trick:  can we remember lessons learned during hardship, even when things get better?  Let’ s hope so!
