Weight Loss Surgery? Psychological evaluations for bariatric and gastric procedures

Surgical weight loss is an important decision that many people make to improve their health, appearance and self-esteem. Bariatric surgery, such as Gastric by-pass surgery or Lap-Band surgery are two of the most common procedures utilized today. Many surgeons or medical centers require patients to undergo a psychiatric or psychological evaluation prior to surgery to assess their current psychological status and ability to follow through on the life style changes required for the surgery to be successful. A pre-surgical psychological evaluation for bariatric surgery involves a review of the patient’s history of psychological problems/substance abuse, family history, educational and occupational history, medical history, previous attempts at weight loss, current stressors/supports and a Mental Status Examination. In addition, the issues of whether the patient fully comprehends the seriousness of the procedure and the lifestyle changes and follow-up that must take place post-surgically are evaluated. Whether or not the patient has unrealistic expectations about the outcome of surgery is considered as well. When appropriate standardized psychological testing can be administered, as well. The evaluation typically takes 2-3 sessions to complete. A written report, addressed to the surgeon or surgical group will be provided within a week of the final appointment with the patient.

In terms of insurance, Dr. Torquato is a participating provider for Anthem Blue Cross. She can also provide superbills to patients who have out-of-network benefits with other insurance plans, so they can receive reimbursed for these services.
