Porn and young men: what they don’t know can really hurt them

Recently Time Magazine, in its April 11 issue, published a thought-provoking article on the effects viewing pornography can have on sexual performance and desire in young men.  It may not come as a surprise that viewing pornography online can quickly turn into an addiction, and that it an create a very unrealistic and distorted view of what sexual intimacy in a committed relationship is like.  Less widely realized, though, is that for a significant subset of young men, viewing porn makes it difficult to feel desire and to achieve erection in a normal, “face-to-face” relationship.

Turns out there are online support groups that help porn users “just say no” and stay away, although for some, the internet browser and the smartphone may become so associated to porn that they need to take a break and get other types of support.  Gabe Deem, age 28 and founder of Reboot Nation, an online support site and channel, makes the point that as a teen and young adult he stayed away from cocaine because he had been taught that it was dangerous.  It makes sense that parents need to take steps to teach their teens and young adults that viewing online porn can also be dangerous, in more ways than they may thought.

The article can be found here, although you will need to subscribe to read it.  As a parent of now adult sons, I think it’s worth the $2.99.  You may think so too.
