Other than the loss of a child, there is nothing more devastating than the loss of one’s spouse. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, married long-term or briefly, happily or with rocky spots. It is a loss that punches you in the gut, hollows out your heart, and leaves you wondering how (and maybe even if) to go on.
There is a wonderful group of people at Soaring Spirits Life Foundation who sponsor a whole range of programs to help and support widows and widowers at all stages of the process. There is so much there that you’ll want to explore for yourself. Here are two good places to start:
A Checklist for the Newly Widowed. This is on the Soaring Spirits Life Foundation website, which will lead to all of the other great programs.
WidowedVillage.org , a Facebook-style community of people to talk to, right now if you want to. They have forums, groups for all ages and stages, and all sorts of other helpful ways to connect with others who truly understand.
Camp Widow, a wonderful annual conference, now in two locations, that brings everyone together for a weekend that is healing, inspirational, and yes, fun!
Take a look and see what you think. And please, pass the word along so that when someone you know needs this, they will find it. To have connection in such a time of loneliness makes all the difference.
